Mummy moment: Eight months

This summer has brought so many changes to my baby. Some awesome and some... not awesome.

She's sitting.
She's starting to crawl.
She has five visible teeth and one tiny corner of a molar.
She walks really well if someone holds her hands.
She started to pull herself up to standing.
She's tall.
She looks more like me than she used to.
She interacts more.
She plays with intention instead of just exploring her toys.

And she started making strange.

She started this a few days ago, and I am not a fan of the new behaviour. She's very clingy with me, which makes it difficult for me to do anything around the house. But even more than that, it doesn't feel nice that she cries when her Daddy or one of her grandparents holds her. Up until now, she's been so easygoing about who holds her and it feels a bit like I've failed somehow now that she's become fussy with anyone who isn't me. I think that Jevon's feeling get hurt when she cries at him. I know that this is just a developmental stage and is very common behaviour, especially in breastfed babies. Unfortunately, sometimes the logical part of my brain doesn't communicate well with my guilt cortex. And so I feel guilty that Alexa only wants her Mummy.

Thankfully, she's still pretty cheery if I'm nearby or if I'm totally out of the room (out of sight, out of mind, I guess).

Some of the other changes are more positive. We have changed her bedtime routine, so now Jevon can put her down as easily as I can. I used to nurse her to sleep and I think that this change has improved Alexa's relationship with her Dad. I love that she'll go to sleep for him when she rarely used to do that. It makes my evenings easier, too. She's often going to bed more easily, but it's not totally reliable. I think that my be due, in part, to the fact that we've really disrupted her routine over the last week.

In other news, Alexa is a rock star at swimming lessons. We just had our third lesson and she is amazing. She lets me dunk her right under the water with no complaints. When she sees that she is getting close to the water, she closes her eyes and mouth. It's adorable. The pool that we go to is in Brampton and is a salt-water pool. I love the salt water because it is so much easier on our skin. I can remember having swimming lessons in a chlorine pool as a kid and I could barely see afterwards (no one wore goggles at that time. Maybe we should have).

Time keeps on ticking and my baby keeps changing. Soon she'll change again.

Happy eight months, baby.

I have totally been there, for the past 14 months!! There was never a time until this last month when Leah was really comfortable with anybody but me, and it always made me feel a little like it was my fault, but I just had to keep reminding myself that she is who she is - and then it finally passed!
