Cottage week, part one

In August, we had a lovely week of vacation with friends Jen and Wil. We travelled North of Huntsville, to Kawagama Lake. The cottage was a 13km drive off the beaten path. No matter, we're used to gravel roads. After all, Grammie and Opa live on a gravel road that is maintained only by Opa.

Well.

This was seriously off the beaten path. Those 13 kilometres were full of blind corners and steep hills. There was a hill down to the driveway that was so steep that I couldn't walk up it without going switchback; otherwise, my feet slid backwards down the hill. At the bottom of that hill was a sharp turn into the steep driveway.

We both drove very carefully down the hill and down the driveway into the cottage. It turned out that Wil's two-wheel drive SUV couldn't make it back up the steepest part of the hill. Thankfully, a friendly neighbour with a serious truck towed Wil back up the hill, where he parked for the rest of the week.

Our four-wheel drive Matrix managed to get up the hill, but not when full of gear. At the end of the week, we ferried loads of luggage up the hill with the Matrix, and packed both vehicles at the top of the hill. What an adventure!

Steep driveway notwithstanding, it was a lovely week. Some sun, some rain, some hot weather, and some cool. We had a great time (my nephews would say that it was epic).

The cottage from halfway up the driveway.

I took this gorgeous berry shot when I was out bluejay hunting. Several jays, including some juveniles, lived on the property. I went out bluejay hunting a few times, but never managed to get a great picture of one. I have a couple from a distance, but no in-focus close pictures.

We spent a lot of time in the water. We brought a floating chair and Jen and Wil brought a few floating chairs and a floating raft.

Best buds, relaxing in the water.

Beauty nudie baby in the water with Mummy (Jen's photo).

Captain Cannonball himself. Wil perfected the optimal splash radius over the week. This shot perfectly captures much of Wil's week.

Our sunny day set-up.

Our set-up from another angle (Jen's photo).

Early morning dad and babe. Jevon bought me a new lens for our anniversary, and we spent a few mornings playing baby photo-shoot with it. These chairs were under the canopy and were the perfect place to have morning coffees, or to escape the sun in the heat of the warm days (you can tell from the clothes that this particular morning was not a warm one).

Mummy and Alexa.

After she grabbed my glasses and tossed them off my face. She's got quite the victorious expression going on!

Finding treasure... Yay, a soother!

Just looking a little like an elf. I love this sweater - a hand-me-down from cousin Simon.

Morning treats for Mummy and baby:

Playing with daddy. This picture perfectly captures the moment.

Another morning, another baby photo shoot! Love the first one - missed connection.

Various smiley expressions. We were playing with her chiming toy to elicit these giggles.

Her new grin: eyes scrunched, nose wrinkled and jaw to the side.

Playing and yelling:

Tickles!

Another angle on the new funny little grin.

Standing and talking.

Wondering why Daddy stopped paying attention to her.

Nice picture of Jevon on his own.

Playing!

Standing up again. She has since outgrown these pyjamas, which made me sad because they were ridiculously cute on her.
