Jevon was headed to the lovely Fort Lee, New Jersey, so I decided to leave town and go visit my good friend Ashley in Yellowknife.
The flights there (Toronto-Edmonton and Edmonton-Yellowknife) were better than expected, but our flight was delayed and we had a tight connection. Alexa was asleep in my arms as we landed, and in the rush to get out I left both of our jackets on the plane. Aargh! They're somewhere in the WestJet netherworld of lost items.
But everyone was fabulous. People in the Yellowknife airport immediately picked us out as tourists. Was it my lack of jacket? My baby's very pale skin? The fact that it's a small town and they hadn't seen me before?
One woman even offered to give me her scarf so that I wouldn't get cold. So sweet! But we had extra clothes in our suitcase, so we were fine.
The first cabby that I found wouldn't take me because he didn't want Alexa's carseat on his car seat. What the????? He tried to convince me that he "didn't have the right kind of attachment for the carseat". I explained that all I needed was a seatbelt that locks. After some debate, I exclaimed, "Oh! You don't want me because I have a baby!" He corrected me that he didn't mind the baby. He just didn't want her carseat. Can you say asshole? The second cabby was much better and he actually apologized for the poor impression that the first guy may have given me.
We got to Ashley's apartment, where she had left us keys, a welcoming note, and her car. We settled in. Ashley had borrowed lots of baby gear from her friend Jessica so that I wouldn't have to cart a playpen, high chair, or toys across the country.
The set-up in Alexa's room:

More to come later. I realized that there are 102 pictures that I wanted to add to this post, so I have to scale back a little!

Ooh, that little playpen curtain thingy is genius!! I need that for the next baby for sure. What do they even call those?
Ummm, it's called a blanket.
Teehee... I just rigged a blanket onto the end of the playpen because Alexa settles in beautifully if she can't see me leave, but goes mental if she can see me leave.
